Special Earth Week Activities
"Lunch and Learn" Seminars
Monday-Friday, April 16-20

Want to learn to ECO-driving habits? Know how to recognize a poisoned tree or garden with "native species"? Have you thought about becoming a bee keeper or protecting black bears or the best local family getaway location? Want to remodel a home with energy efficient methods? Then join us for a week of “Lunch and Learn” seminars. Bring your lunch and join us. The seminars will be held in Weinberg Auditorium at 11 a.m., Monday thru Friday. 
Third Annual "Green Mile" Bike Ride
Wednesday, April 18

Come join us for the “Green Mile” Bike Ride and enjoy the beautiful weather and scenery in observance of Earth Day. The bike rides will be held on Wednesday, April 18th. Cyclists will meet at the Conference Center quad in front of building 5700 at 11 a.m. There are two designated routes. Each biker will receive an ORNL water bottle at the end of each ride.

Thom Mason, ORNL Director, and Johnny Moore, DOE Site Manager, will welcome participants and present several awards:
  • ORNL's Third Annual Community Sustainability Award to an ORNL-based individual or team who is making significant contribution to community sustainability at the local, regional, national, or global level
  • Tennessee Chamber of Commerce and Industry Environmental Excellence Award recognizing the efforts of the Sustainable Campus Initiative
  • East Tennessee Green Light Award from the U.S. Green Building Council for sustainable building development
  • Federal Energy Management Program Award for the Green IT initiative that resulted in significant energy savings associated with computer usage
  • DOE EStar Award for applying lessons learned during the LEED Gold certification of an existing building to future building certifications
Registration and Green Vendors Fair
Lobby and Main Street, Building 5700

Stop by one of the registration tables and enter the drawings for the door prizes that will be given at the end of the event. Registration tables will be in the lobby of 5700 and at the west end of Main Street. Free items will be distributed at locations throughout the event area.

Want to build an energy-efficient home or garden with "native species"? Have you thought about composting? The Green Vendors Fair will include more than 20 vendors with product- themed displays centered on recycled content, healthy cooking, sustainable landscaping ideas, recycling, energy and water conservation practices, Energy Star rating appliances, and other environmental considerations.

Green Living Demonstrations
East Campus Quad and Main Street

Ever wondered how to rescue black bears? Create a container garden or a dried flower arrangement? Photograph the natural environment? Prepare healthy meals and snacks? Learn more about animals at the Knoxville Zoo? Attend the “Green” Living demonstrations and learn from local businesses and groups emphasizing “green” living (healthy cooking, landscaping ideas, recycling, energy and water conservation, and more.

Living “Green” Activities
Main Street, Building 5700

Recycling is one of the most environmentally friendly disposal options. Do your part and join the effort to help keep our planet green. Start collecting recyclable materials now for ORNL Earth Day. The Sustainability at Work group will provide containers on Main Street, April 19,  for collecting the first five items below. Appalachian Bear Rescue will place a barrel in the cafeteria area, April 16 - April 20, for food donations. 
  • Personal cell phones (for womens' shelter)
  • Unopened travel-sized toiletries and personal items (for womens' shelter)
  • Aluminum pop tabs (Ronald McDonald House)
  • Used athletic shoes (Nike "Reuse-a-Shoe" and Nike Grind programs)
  • Eyeglasses (Lion's Club)
  • Apples, pears, and unsalted nuts (Appalachian Bear Rescue)
Live Music

Enjoy the festive atmosphere accompanied by the lively sounds of the Shelter Road Band and Greenwood Band. You may spot some talented co-workers in these groups. Enjoy some great music while you learn more about protecting and conserving our natural resources.
