Southern Laos is best described as an intoxicating blend of nature, culture and history. Take time to explore this region at a slower pace- lingering at cascading waterfalls, chatting with locals in hill tribe villages and wandering through timeless temples- and truly experience the wonders of Laos.

DAY 1 - PAKSE ARRIVAL - BOLOVEN PLATEAU - CHAMPASAK

Upon arrival to Pakse, our guide and driver will be waiting to provide transport to the hotel for check in. After a bit of relaxation, embark on a short orientation tour of the town exploring the colonial and Chinese-style buildings as well as the giant local market.

Afterwards, depart for the Bolaven Plateau, a mountainous region home to dozens of hill tribes, waterfalls and coffee and tea plantations.

The first stops are at Tad Fane and Tad Yuang waterfalls. Tad Fane is a set of twin 120-meter-high waterfalls formed by the merging waters of the Champy and Pak Koot rivers. These impressive falls are situated on the edge of Dong Hua Sao protected area, 38km from Pakse

Note: water levels may vary accordingly to the previous rainy season.

Make a short stop in Paksong before continuing east to reach the Sinouk Coffee Resort. An expert in coffee will lead a visit through the coffee plantation, explaining all about the indigenous coffee trees and different processing stages.

After the visit, enjoy a delicious lunch. Most of the vegetables supplied to the meal come from the on-site organic garden. Following lunch, sample many different types of coffee.

On the drive back to Pakse, two stops will be made. The first stop is the visit of Tad Lo waterfalls, a beautiful formation of three separate falls. From the bridge guests will first see Tad Hang and then Tad Lo in the distance. The most impressive of the three, Tad Suong, is located a further 10km upriver.

The second stop is the small village of Ban Houay Houn, famous for its Katu textiles. Observe the village’s women weaving without a traditional loom, using their legs to stretch the fabric.

In the late afternoon you will transfer to the small town of Champasak, on the banks of the Mekong River.

DAY 2 - CHAMPASAK - WAT PHOU - CHAMPASAK

After breakfast, pay a visit to Wat Phou. Recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, Wat Phou is a spectacular pre-Angkorian temple that sits among the rice fields and waterways of southern Laos.

The temple was constructed in three levels: the bottom level is focused on the baray (water reservoir) and promenade, the second level features pavilions and galleries of carvings, and the top level is the sanctuary. This site served as the most important economic and political centre of the region and still is one of the Lao people’s most revered temples.

The rest of the day is at leisure to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Champasak and the hotel’s facilities. Alternatively, set off on a bicycle to explore the town independently.

Overnight in Champasak

DAY 3 - CHAMPASAK - SIPANDON - CHAMPASAK

Drive south to the 4,000 Islands Region. Called “Siphandon” in Lao language, this area is where the Mekong stretches to over 14km wide. The river flows between an unknown number of islands, creating waterfalls and rapids.

Travel first by car for around 2 hours to the village of Ban Nakasang. From here, board a local boat to the peaceful island of Done Khone, home to simple villages and plantations. Spend some time cycling around the area or, alternatively , explore the area in a tuk tuk.

One of the stops during the day will be to the impressive Lippi falls, which are on the west side of Don Khone, very close to the Cambodian border. Their original name, Tad Somphamit, means “trap spirit” and the locals revere these falls as they believe they act as a trap for bad spirits.

Continue with a short boat trip, which will provide the opportunity to spot the rare Irrawaddy Dolphin.

Continue the exploration observing the locals and easing into the relaxed pace of the region. Lunch will be included at a local restaurant.

Return to the mainland by boat and then return to the hotel by car, arriving in time for sunset.

DAY 4 - CHAMPASAK - AT LEISURE ON DON DAENG

Enjoy a full day at leisure on the beautiful peaceful island of Don Daeng.

Relax by the pool at the hotel or explore the area by bicycle. Ride alog the shady paths, interact with the locals or visit some of the area’s sandy beaches. Along the way, sample some local fruits or catch the locals at work on handicrafts such as basket weaving. The island also has a few pagodas, which date back to the Wat Phou era and are entangled within the surrounding jungle.

DAY 5 - CHAMPASAK - PAKSE DEPARTURE

After breakfast, transport will be provided back to Pakse

Champasak is also an excellent region to explore via bicycle or motorbike, and the dirt roads and peaceful villages around the town are lovely ways to soak in some of the flavour of Lao culture. You’ll really only need a day or two here to see what you need; many travellers opt for a simple day trip from Paske.

When to go to Champasak

In general, the best time of year to travel in Laos is during the months of October-April, especially November-January; these are the coolest times of the year. March and April are the hottest months, and the high, muggy temperatures this time of year make for uncomfortable conditions for most travellers.

Where to eat in Champasak

Because Champasak is a small town, the eating options in the town are relatively limited – you just won't find a large variety of restaurants here, and Champasak is not the place to come if you're looking for as many different options as possible. Having said that, although the food options here are few, most travellers are impressed with the quality and deliciousness of the food available within the town. You can expect friendly service and tasty dishes from the restaurants in town and affordable prices for it all. Lao or Thai dishes will run about LAK25,000-LAK35,000. Some restaurants in town also have Western foods (such as burgers, baguettes, or chips) available for about LAK40,000-LAK50,000.

How to get around Champasak

Getting around the town is easy to do on foot or bicycle (bicycles can be rented from most guest houses); Champsak is small, so you don't have to travel far to get around.

Wat Phu, which is about 10km south of the town, is reachable by bicycle – but a motorbike or a tuk-tuk will be a faster and easier ride.

Renting a motorbike also gives you the chance to explore a bit further around the area, so if you really want to maximize your time in Champasak and see as much as possible, this is the way to go. As always, just stay cautious and alert on the roads. Many travellers actually rent a bike in Pakse and drive down to Champasak on their own, especially because there are more options for motorbike rentals in Pakse.

Is Champasak a safe place to visit?

Safety concerns in Champasak are limited, and if you take basic precautions in securing any valuable possessions as well as staying safe on the roads (if you rent a motorbike), then you should have nothing to worry about here in terms of safety.

6. What is the latest time that I can make my reservation?

We can only guarantee bookings made at least 3-working days (not including Sun & Public holidays) before the departure date.

7. How far in advance can I book?

You can book as far as 24 months in advance, but please ensure you remember you have made the reservation. We will charge 20% of total rate is required upon the confirmation of services require full payment 60 days before departure.

You can expect to receive the invoice as a reminder well in advance of your trip.

8. How do I make a reservation for someone else?

To complete a reservation for someone else, simply type in his or her name instead of yours for guest name. Don’t forget to use your email address to receive your confirmation information.

9. What happens to my tour booking if my flight is delayed?

Please inform us and the hotel immediately as any changes or fee will depend on the hotel policy. We will also try our best to offer you similar ground services.

A deposit of 25% of the total of the tour is required upon confirmation of booking tour. You have peace of mind until 2 months before departure dates. At that point, we would require full prepayment only 60 days before departure for all services by money transfer or credit card payment with all bank transfer charges/ fees to be paid by the client.
All the tour packages on this website operate on a pre-payment basis. Payment can be made either using a major credit card as Visa, Mastercard, and American Express Credit Card, not including credit card transaction fee ( Please add in 3% fee for Visa, Mastercard or 4% for American Express to the total amount of payment each time).

Cancellations timeline will be charged as follows:

60 days prior to the arrival date: Non Refundable deposit charge and the cancellation fees applied by the concerned services suppliers such as flight company, boat company, train, hotels… in accordance with their cancellations policies if any.

No refund will be given for any unused service after the trip has commenced.

5. Liability

VIET GREEN TRAVEL is not responsible for any loss, injury or damage sustained by passengers. Additional expenses incurred due to delays, accidents, natural disaster, political actions, and unrest must be borne by the passengers. Passengers are required to have full travel insurance.

Airline schedules and local conditions may affect accommodation and itineraries. Should this occur, VIET GREEN TRAVEL will endeavor to substitute a suitable arrangement of similar value. Participation on any tours implies full agreement to the above conditions by all parties involved.

6. Passport and Entry Visa

Your passport must be valid for at least six months following your entry date to your travel destination.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you are in possession of a valid passport and visa and all travel documents are valid for travel.

7. Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not included in your tour price. It is the passenger’s responsibility to verify whether his/her local health insurance carrier provides coverage while traveling. Please contact your insurance carrier for details.

VIET GREEN TRAVEL strongly advises that you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy to cover all aspects of your tour: the loss of deposits through cancellation lost of baggage and personal items, personal injury and death. A waiver must be signed if insurance is declined.
