Playing on an Indo-Chinese golf course, what are the dos and don’ts? Indochina has no doubt become one of the leading destinations in the world for visiting golfers. There are now over 325 golf courseswith new one’s appearing on a regular basis to accommodate the large numbers of golf travellers.
Here are a few special golf tips that if well understood will ensure that you have an excellent time on the links in Indochina.
Golf in Indochina can be a bit different to what you are used to, and certain aspects of etiquette must be strictly adhered to. You must remember that you are in a country that has completely different culture and customs, and you must adapt to this as a visitor.
The style in Thailand, Indonesia, and Cambodia is certainly a more relaxed when organizing things, and although this can lead to great frustration, it is very impolite to show this, and certainly will not lead to any great assistance. A simple smile and show of courtesy goes a very long way on the golf course.
When playing golf in Indochina remember you are a visitor, and respect the locals who are also playing. Golf is still quite a new sport out here and they are not quite so familiar with the etiquette that we have been taught.
I had never come across playing in a 5 ball before I moved here. One particular group of locals in Indonesia had 2 caddies each, (one for the umbrella and one for the clubs) meaning there were 15 people walking up every hole. Quite a sight I can assure you. More than often, they will not stand aside and let you play through as they are not so familiar with this concept of golf. However, if they are holding your game up, if you are a 2 ball for example, a polite request may solve the problem. Getting frustrated and hitting balls into their group is certainly not the thing to do.
Caddies are a unique feature of golf in Indochina, and predominantly female, they perform a great task in very tiring conditions. Always be polite and courteous to your caddy, and you are sure to get a great service. Although the language can be a problem, there are ways to get around this. Tips are greatly appreciated by the caddies and I recommend around $10 US dollars or more if you are pleased with her service.
Call holes at par 3’s are also a fairly unique feature in Thailand. When all of your group’s balls are on the green, simply have your caddy mark the ball, then stand aside and let the group behind play their tee shots. You then proceed onto the green and complete the hole. The concept of this is to speed up play but I am not convinced that it works at all. However, it is a rule on many of the courses and must be adhered to.
The refreshment and drink stops that are located every 3 or 4 holes are a great concept in Indochina. When you stop for a break, remember to ensure that you do not fall behind the group in front. By maintaining your group in relation to the players in front will avoid any unnecessary confrontation on the course with other groups behind.
For visitors that have played golf in Indochina before, you will be certainly be aware that there are many water hazards on the courses. Often these ‘lakes’ are frequented by young males with the purpose of finding your ball should you hit an errant tee shot. If you should be in this situation, a small tip of $1 US is expected by the ‘crocodile’, should he manage to retrieve your ball.

Phokeethra Country Club
The Sofitel-managed Phokeethra Country Club is one of the best courses available in Cambodia. The golf course hosted the 2009 Johnnie Walker Classic and 2010 Cambodian Open. Major renovations in 2018 have brought up the course standards to those set when first opened.
The location is perfect for Cambodia golf visitors as it is close to the Siem Reap International Airport. The course itself reflects much having to do with Cambodian culture and history. For example between the 9th green and 10th tee is a restored Roluh bridge, which is also the iconic image used in the course logo, dating back to the 11th century Khmer empire.
Bermuda and Paspalum grasses are used on the greens and fairways, respectively. The combination ensures fast rolling putting surfaces and a high standard of course conditions all year round. The new 7,363-yard layout reflects Phokeethra Country Club dedication to enhancing an exclusive golfing experience. Eight of the new 2018 greens improve playability while adding many enhancement challenges on the back nine in particular.
Sweeping fairways and generous greens still give the Cambodia golf club a distinctive layout and feel. Natural lagoons and sand bunkers thread through the course and provide challenges on every hole. The course provides a good mix of tricky par 3, individual par 4 and par 5 which require a combination of long drives and good direction control to score well. The signature double water carry 18th-hole offers a daunting final shot into a challenging island green.
Angkor Golf Resort
The world-class Faldo designed Angkor Golf Resort is the best golf course in Cambodia and by a wide margin. The six-time major winner, Nick Faldo himself, received a blessing from local monks and then opened the golf course in December 2007, his first golf course in Cambodia. The Angkor Golf Resort brings Cambodia squarely onto international golf destination map.
Tess, fairways, and greens are all maintained as what you would expect from a Faldo designed, and managed the golf course. The latest Paspalum turf ensures excellent year-round playing conditions.
The Siem Reap golf course is a fair test of golf for all players and requires thinking and strategy on every hole to score well. For example, the strategically placed bunkers and water hazards are tricky, but easily seen from each tee box. The greens have plenty of subtle undulations, and they reward and encourage a variety of approach shots. On the other hand, each holes difficulty can be moderated daily by specific pin positions, easy or challenging. Furthermore, various tee box locations allow for both low and mid-handicappers to choose the right course length for their game.
The final three holes make up some of the most challenging, but fun, holes on the Angkor Resort golf course. The par-5 16th is a 588 monster that is probably not reachable in two shots except for very long hitters. The angle of the green together with the water on the left of the hole poses a real challenge for those wishing to get their approach shots close. A cautious lay-up, away from the hazard, on the second shot will leave a tough pitch over a deep bunker to a shallow green. Hole 17 is the longest par three on the course and plays to a green guarded by water on the right side. The back pin locations, in particular, will demand a very well hit accurate tee shot.
The 440 yard par-4 finishing hole is as good as they come and will undoubtedly lead to some dramatic finishes, a Faldo signature! The slight dogleg to the left sees water running down the left side affecting both the tee shot and the approach. The best tee shot must challenge the water on the left to open up into the green.
The Angkor Resort golf course is sure to offer enjoyment for all players and will have golfers coming back time and time again. Don't miss Angkor Golf Resort's 300-meter long driving range; a great practice facility to tune up before your next round! The Angkor Golf Club is the place to play on all Cambodia golf holidays.
