Heritage Line Ginger Junk in 2 days
Welcome aboard of Heritage Line in the serene waters of Lan Ha Bay, the still so unknown extension of Halong Bay.
Lan Ha Bay stretches almost all around the eastern coast line – from the northern to the southern tip – of Cat Ba island, which is the largest island in this area. Discover with us the wondrous scenery of quiet waters dotted with limestone pillars and tiny islets cladded with forest vegetation rising from the emerald sea of the Gulf of Tonkin. Lan Ha Bay, a unique world heritage.
This cruise is operated with our vessel Ginger only.
Tour Plan
After meeting at Heritage Line’s welcome lounge at the Tuan Chau Marina, we take a quick speedboat transfer to your luxurious floating home before starting our unique journey of exploring one of the wonders of nature – Lan Ha Bay and its main island of Cat Ba. The first highlight of the cruise is lunch, which we serve in Ginger’s nearly 360-degree light-flooded restaurant. Our live cooking in the open kitchen is a one of a kind experience – enjoy the culinary display along with fantastic panoramic views of the passing scenery.
Relax on the terrace deck or on your private balcony and soak in the enchanting aura which emanates from the surreal seascape. While we cruise along in the early afternoon, there is time to enjoy our unique facilities on board. Take a plunge in the pool with infinity-like vistas or let us pamper you with a selection of fine treatments and massages in the beautiful Ginger Spa.
As we reach the shore of a small lagoon on Cat Ba Island, we hop on bicycles (electric cart transfers are also available) for a tour along small paved roads towards Viet Hai village. Little has changed in Viet Hai since the ancestors of the 80 households settled here centuries ago. Situated in a valley within Cat Ba National Park and surrounded on all sides by forest and mountains, the locals are isolated from the island’s other villages and towns. The community is self-sufficient, as the residents provide for themselves by working the farms, fishing, or collecting rain water for drinking. Here you have the unique and authentic opportunity to meet the local inhabitants, learn about the fruits and vegetables grown in the valley, have a glimpse of local households and try some homemade liquors.
Back on board, our chef is prepared for an interactive cooking class in the restaurant’s open kitchen. Learn about local ingredients as well as the preparation of classic Vietnamese dishes.
As the sun sets, we arrive at a tranquil anchor spot for the night. In this hidden spot, you can revel in the memories of the day’s adventures with a cocktail under the stars.
After a delicious dinner, you may like to unwind at our bar with a digestif or watch a movie in the evening cinema which is set up in the dining area later on. Or join our team and have some fun fishing for squid before retiring to your room.
Wake up early and join our Tai Chi session on the terrace deck to ease your mind and muscles with the first rays of the sun touching the water. Coffee, tea and breakfast pastries await you in the dining room to start the new day.
It is time for Ginger to lift her anchors and cruise to Frog Lake, a secluded spot which is perfect for our morning excursion. Go for a refreshing “bay swim” or explore this captivating marine landscape via kayak. The cliffs stretch vertically out of the water and you feel a sense of freedom meandering through this green medley of water and tree-topped islets.
Back on board, we serve a hearty breakfast while cruising back to our mid-bay anchoring spot, from where we will transfer you back to the welcome lounge at the pier. Savour the last moments of this unique journey while relaxing on comfy sun beds on the terrace deck.

1. Best time to go is from January to March
Weather
My best advice is not to be put off coming in the raining season. The rain usually only happens for a few hours in the afternoon and the locals are used to carrying on with their day no matter how heavy the downpour is, so no activities will be cancelled due to it.
The weather varies across the country. The northern and highland regions exhibit more seasonal trends than the likes of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and the south. If you are coming here for the first time, I suggest packing summer clothes and a few light jackets for the evenings.
Looking to base your decision on more than just weather? Here are some additional considerations:
Public Holiday
Tet Holiday (End of January/ Beginning of February)
Tet lasts around ten days. For four of them, all the shops will be closed in the main cities and hotspots such as Hoi An will be very busy. The usual bustling cities are replaced with an eerie peacefulness which in itself is a unique experience.
30th April:
Reunification Day.
This celebrates the Reunification Day, or the Fall of Saigon (HCMC). There are fireworks and celebrations throughout many of the cities, the most impressive being in HCMC itself.
2. If you are from Europe, you might not need a visa.
Scandinavia, Southeast Asia, and Western Europe, get a free 15-day Visa. If you leave the country after or during this Visa you may be asked to wait 30 days before re-entering, in this instance, you would be better to get the 3-month multiple entry Visa online (at least 3 working days before your flight).
Citizens of the United States, Canada, and Australia can apply for visa on arrival. The cost is about $45USD for a 30-day single entry visa.
3. Everyone is a millionaire here.
Ever wondered what being a millionaire is like? Travelling to Vietnam will let you fulfil this dream. The exchange rate for the Vietnam Dong (VND) (at the time of writing) is at about:
1 US Dollar (USD) = 22,781 VND
which means 1,000,000 VND is around $44, the cost of a mid-range hotel room.
Vendors are not officially allowed to accept currency other than the VND so make sure not to be caught out without the local currency
4. Exchange money at jewelry shops for a better rate, and withdraw money from Citi bank to avoid multiple transaction fees.
Most ATMs in the country accept Visa or Master Card. In all of the major airports, there are money exchanges booths, however, you can find a better exchange rate in the jewelry and gold shops in HCMC and Hanoi around the central part of town (in HCMC, they surround Ben Thanh market).
Many of the local banks limit you from withdrawing more than $100USD at a time. Although, depending on your bank account, you can withdraw as much as $250USD from an HSBC ATM and $400USD from Citibank.
5. Your trip will be much easier if you master these useful Vietnamese phrases.
The official language is Vietnamese. Many visitors find it extremely difficult to gain a quick grasp of this language as it is tonal and requires many of the sounds to be made in your throat instead of your mouth. Here are some quick and useful phrases which may come in handy even without mastering the tones. Make sure to check out our guide to learn 100 basic Vietnamese phrases as I have generally found locals are pleased to hear you attempting their language so will help you out.
Hello: Xin chào (sin chow)
Thank you: Cảm ơn. (gauhm uhhn) – it is not common to use ‘please’ in Vietnamese-
I’m sorry/ Excuse me: Xin lỗi. (sin loy)
Excuse me waitress: Em oi!
The Bill Please: Tinh tien!
How Much?: Bao nhieu? (bow yew)
Too Expensive: Mac qua! (Mac wa)
No Sugar: Khong suong (Khom duong) – The norm in Vietnam is to add sugar.
